The fauna of Euglossinae bees were studied in two areas of "terra firme" continuous forest in the Central Amazon. Brazil. During one year (september/1989-august/1990) the collections were done fortnightly, using traps with eight kinds of seents baits. The traps were placed in the understory and in the tree crowns. The continuous forest of "terra firme" near Manaus are among those with the highest speeies richness of Euglossinae in the Neotropics. The species richness was higher than that found in other studies carried out in Brazil also. One study area had higher species richness and abundance, while species diversity was higher in another one. The diversity was different significally between the two areas.

Aspectos da biologia de Euplusia violacea (Blanchard) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossini) Zoologia
Peruquetti,Rui Carlos; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira.
Nests of orchid bee Euplusia violacea (Blanchard, 1840) colleted in trap-nests and in the wood of a construction in Viçosa, Minas Gerais (20º45'30"S, 42º52'05"W), Brazil, were studied under laboratory condictions. Some aspects of the biology of these bees were observed, such as sex-ratio, development time, Iongevity and others. Some aspects of the behavior of E. violada were also studied.

Comparative study on the use of specific and heterologous microsatellite primers in the stingless bees Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lopes,Denilce Meneses; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira; Salomão,Tânia Maria Fernandes; Tavares,Mara Garcia.
Due to their high degree of polymorphism, microsatellites are considered useful tools for studying population genetics. Nevertheless, studies of genetic diversity in stingless bees by means of these primers have revealed a low level of polymorphism, possibly the consequence of the heterologous primers used, since in most cases these were not specifically designed for the species under consideration. Herein we compared the number of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, as well as observed heterozygosity in Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury populations, using specific and heterologous primers. The use of specific primers placed in evidence the greater frequency of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, besides an expressive increase in observed...

Correlation between honey production and some morphological traits in africanized honey bees (Apis melifera) Ciência Rural
Souza,Darcet Costa; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira; Regazzi,Adair José.
This study focused on the correlation between honey production length and width of the tibia of the third pair of legs, corbicular area, pupal weight, and glossal length, in Africanized honey bees in Viçosa/MG, Brazil. Correlation values were relatively low, though always positive. The traits glossal length and pupal weight presented the lowest correlation to honey production: 0.225 and 0.410, respectively. The highest correlations were observed between length of the tibia and corbicular area and honey production: 0.587 and 0.549, respectively. In all cases, except pupal weight, correlation was significant. These findings support the notion that worker bees with larger corbicular areas may have a better ability to carry larger quantities of pollen to their...

Cytogenetic characterization of Melipona rufiventris Lepeletier 1836 and Melipona mondury Smith 1863 (Hymenoptera, Apidae) by C banding and fluorochromes staining Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lopes,Denilce Meneses; Pompolo,Sílvia das Graças; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira; Tavares,Mara Garcia.
The stingless bees Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury were analyzed cytogenetically by conventional staining with Giemsa, C-banding and sequential staining with the fluorochromes CMA3/DA/DAPI. Both species presented 2n = 18 and n = 9, except for one colony of M. rufiventris, in which some individuals had 2n = 19 due to the presence of a B chromosome. After Giemsa staining and C-banding the chromosomes appeared very condensed and presented a high heterochromatic content, making it difficult to localize the centromere and therefore to visualize the chromosomes morphology. The constitutive heterochromatin was located in interstitial chromosome regions covering most of the chromosomes extension and consisted mainly of AT, as shown by DAPI staining. The...

In Partamona cupira, caste determination follows the general patterns of Trigonini bees. The effects of the juvenile hormone and the amount of food on the process were studied. The frequency of queens increased with the quantity of food ingest by the larvae and or whith the amount of juvenile hormone topically applicated. Queens emerged earlier than workers. Intercastes were not found, sugesting that castes differentiation is a canalised process in this species.

Foraging pattern and harvesting of resources of subterranean stingless bee Geotrigona subterranea (Friese, 1901) (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Barbosa,Fernando Mendes; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira; Paixão,Joana Fidelis da; Alves,Rogério Marcos de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT Flight activity of bees is influenced both by environmental factors and by internal condition of the colonies. Information about external activity of bees is very important, because it provides data of the species biology, supplying subsidies for the use of these insects in the pollination of crops. The present work aim to evaluate the flight activity of Geotrigona subterranea (Friese, 1901) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in natural environment. This study was performed on the Instituto Federal do Norte de Minas Gerais, in the municipality Januária, Minas Gerais State. Two natural nests were observed. The activities of bees of the colonies were recorded three days each month, during the period of December 2011 to November 2012, totaling 924 observations....

Preferência por estratos florestais e por substâncias odoríferas em abelhas Euglossinae (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Zoologia
Oliveira,Mareio Luiz de; Campos,Lúcio Antônio de Oliveira.
Euglossinae bees of two areas of Terra Firme forest, near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil were studied. During one year the collections were done fortnightly, using traps with eight kinds of scent baits. The traps were placed in the understory and in tree crowns. Some species showed a very clear vertical stratification in the forest. The comparison between the strata studied showed that the fauna of one understory is more similar to other than fauna of crowns and the similarity between fauna of understory and fauna of crown of the the two areaswas low. Some species were specialists while most were generalists in their choice of scent baits. Some species varied its preferences during the year.
